A great student-learner is one who knows how and when to think creatively, critically, and deeply. But how do you get from “good” to “great”? Practice. Great thinkers are aware of the skills they possess and have routines, inclination, and awareness of their surroundings to know how to approach each situation they face.

It’s not uncommon during a meeting with a potential new Breck family to get this question: “What’s a typical Breck student like?” When I first got this question, I was tempted to push back and say, “We don’t have a typical student. All of our students are individuals.” But after more reflection, I realized there is a commonality among our students, one I witness almost every day.

All the right questions

Last week I was talking with a family interested in Breck for kindergarten. When I asked if they had questions for me, they started with common questions such as: What is your average class size? Where do your students typically go to college?  How many AP classes do you offer?  What is the average ACT score for seniors? After asking these questions, the parents asked, “If you were in our position, what would you ask?”

Self-awareness and character matter too

As I was getting ready for work on Thursday, my daughter walked into my bedroom and announced that she had been awake since 5 a.m. She said “I couldn’t fall back to sleep, but that’s OK … I just had an hour of mindfulness.”  I asked her a few questions and she explained that they have been learning about mindfulness in the Lower School, helping students recognize and accept how they are feeling in the present without feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Wow!
